課程概述

This course is to provide a guide to anyone interested in the production of metals and ceramics from ore concentrates and raw materials. In this course, individual stages in the extraction, refining, and synthesis processes will be examined from the viewpoints of thermodynamics, kinetics and phase equilibriums and transformations; alternate production routes will be compared and contrasted. The main microstructural features of metals and ceramics will be outlined, and show how to process or treat them to get the structures (really, in the end, the properties) that you want. It is expected that upon completion of this course, the student will be able to understand the means by which raw materials can be converted to materials of engineering importance.

The primary source of material will come from the lecture notes. No one textbook covers all of the material covered in the course. The course material draws from several textbooks (some are available in the library); these textbooks are listed below. We will use partially-completed lecture notes as a tool for covering the topics in lectures – there are numerous blank spaces for students to fill in as we go over the material, and to take their own additional notes. The lecture notes and any other supplementary reading documents will be available on the departmental website the day before each class. It is students’ responsibility to download and print out the notes to bring to the class.
